Answers

What clients ask before they commit.

Short, direct, on the record.

01What is the pecuniary jurisdiction of consumer commissions in India?

District Commission: up to INR 1 crore. State Commission: INR 1 crore to INR 10 crore. National Commission: above INR 10 crore. These thresholds were revised by the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

02Does the Consumer Protection Act apply to B2B transactions?

The Act applies to consumers who buy goods or avail services for personal use and not for resale or commercial purpose. Pure B2B transactions are generally excluded, but the definition of consumer has been interpreted broadly in certain service contexts.

03What are dark patterns under Indian consumer protection law?

Dark patterns are deceptive design practices on e commerce platforms that manipulate consumer choice. The Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023 identify 13 categories including false urgency, basket sneaking, confirm shaming and forced action. Violation attracts CCPA action.

04Can a consumer file a complaint online in India?

Yes. Consumers can file complaints through the E-Daakhil portal (edaakhil.nic.in), the official online consumer complaint filing platform. The Act also allows electronic filing and video conferencing for hearings.
